Don’t Draw to a Flush when the Board Is Paired

Posted by admin on August 5th, 2010 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

The simplest of concepts is often forgotten in the heat of battle. I remember how timid I was when I first started playing online poker. I strove for the nuts and rarely settled for less. This had to change - you don’t get the nuts very often; certainly not often enough to win tournaments. So over time you adapt and gain a sense of feel allowing you to play lesser hands more confidently. I remember folding straight draws when possible flush draws were on the table. I was probably getting 8-1 on my money too, but passed it up in fear that not all of my outs were live.

Recently on a televised poker online show, Doyle Brunson mysteriously folded a flush draw in a cash game to a relatively small bet. His reasoning was a reminder of what really should have been clear as day.

“I don’t like drawing to flushes with pairs on the board,” said Brunson to the table.

The rest of the players, all professionals, were astonished that he folded. Of course in a cash game a lot less than the nuts wins most hands. This game was much the same, and Brunson’s flush draw was actually live.

Brunson had A-7 hearts. The flop had two hearts on it reading 9-9-4. The turn was a 7, giving him a pair along with his flush draw. He led out and folded to a raise. The risk of him catching his flush and paying off a full house was not worth it to him. Before committing too much money which would make his later potential decisions more difficult, he just let go.

Situations like these are easy to recognize off the table, but sometimes the desire to hit your draw surpasses your better judgment. Remember the basics when you play at Everest Poker francais.

Beginning Again from Broke

Once you’ve seen the bad side of the odds, hit a down swing, run through your bankroll and your reserves, and hit zero, coming back up to build a new start can seem a monumental feat. Especially for those used to playing higher stakes poker online games, not having much to start with and playing at lower level might seem a difficult and even mind numbing situation. But as everyone goes broke, there are many doors to rising back into the poker game. Adjusting your poker play down to smaller stakes is often one of the first ways to begin. Even if you’d been used to playing $5 / $10 or $1 / $2 no limit, dropping back down to $.50 / $1 or less can feel tedious, with a harder leg to build up from. But dropping back to these smaller stakes gives you time to get your chops wet, to regain confidence in your moves while also stacking smaller but worthwhile pots. Many players forget, also, that playing in freerolls or with players points can give you cash payouts that offer a beginning stakes. I’ve built from nothing up to thousands playing off those freebie buy ins, and there is little better feeling than making a mountain out of a freeroll.

Noodle Love

There is something so great about the way that a noodle feels on the teeth. It is the best thing in the world when you take a fork full of noodles that are all twisted up and circled around that it makes you so happy. You stomach just ends up being in the best shape because they make it feel so full and good.

If you are resting up after your latest treatment for your back pain then sit back and eat a bowl of noodles. The Ramen are of great quality and work for twisting up making into a circle. There is always that cartoon that we can all remember with the two dogs that end up kissing because they are sharing a noodle and it ends up coming to an end. There has to be some type of seasoning in it because the flavor is important. If you want to put some spaghetti sauce on it you can and many people love it. You can also put some butter and garlic together and end up with a real treat. Make your family a great meal this weekend with this and they will love you for a long time. Don’t forget to add a glass of wine with the meal to help with the digestion and improve the taste of the overall meal, the scientists and doctors all agree that a little bit is beneficial for overall health.

Bad News for Casinos

Posted by admin on May 12th, 2010 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

There is some more bad news for land-based poker casinos, at least in the U.S. For the second straight year, gaming revenues produced by the nation’s commercial casino industry tumbled as the recession caused gamblers to watch their wallets more closely. Perhaps people are playing more online poker these days.

According to figures released Thursday by the Washington, D.C.-based American Gaming Association in its annual “State of the States” report, commercial casinos in 13 states collected $30.74 billion from gamblers, a 5.5 percent decrease compared to $32.54 billion collected in 2008.

A year ago, the commercial casino industry saw revenues decline by 4.7 percent. The two-year drop has sent the annual revenue figure back to levels last seen in 2005.

Of the 13 states with commercial casinos, eight reported declines in gaming revenues compared with 2008. One, Kansas, opened its first casino in 2009. The American Gaming Association found the 12 states with racetrack casinos saw revenues increase 5 percent over 2008. States with gaming markets that are considered destination resorts, such as Las Vegas, suffered the deepest revenue declines in 2009.

New Jersey’s casinos in Atlantic City took the largest tumble, falling 13.3 percent from $4.54 billion in 2008 to $3.94 billion last year. Nevada casinos won $10.39 billion from gamblers in 2009, down 10.4 percent compared to 2008. Mississippi casinos, which includes the Gulf Coast, saw revenues decline 9.4 percent while the Louisiana market was off 5 percent.

So, have you been playing more online poker?

Check the Money Monthly

We have all heard about the value of good bankroll management. It makes us better, happier, and less impoverished poker players. But do you know that your bankroll is not the only one that you should be watching? You should be checking on your casino’s bankroll. Most poker casinos will post monthly audits and reports so that their players can check in on how they are doing. The recent trend to post this information is part of a larger move in the casino world towards increased transparency in all gaming operations. Look around at your favorite poker online casino to see if you can find the monthly audit. It is important that you realize that casinos are not under any obligation to post monthly reports. It is completely up to the casino’s prerogative to decide whether they want to give their players a peak at the finances. The good casinos do this as a service their players. These are the casinos that you should play at because they obviously care about you as a consumer. Don’t waste your time with casinos that are not willing to provide you with the hard financial facts that you need to see how much they are taking out of your bankroll. Transparency is always the best option.

On Playing against a Non-Attentive Player

Posted by admin on June 2nd, 2009 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

In all of the poker books and all of the discussion of poker theory out there, there often is a great overlying assumption that your opponent has some consideration or care for playing ‘correctly’ in the game. That is: you assume your opponent, like you, wants to put his money in good, and not gamble against supreme odds. You also might assume that your opponent can catch on to basic strategic concepts, in that they will known when the four to the flush on the board hits and you are betting, you might likely have it.

These kinds of assumptions, though, can go out the window in poker games where the players are entirely playing their cards alone (and often not playing them well!). Many players give absolutely no consideration to what kind of ‘fancy poker moves’ you are making, or any other ideas such as pot odds, implied odds, or etc. Instead, they just want to play, and see the cards come down. Often the money and the winning is just a side-effect for these people. It’s entertainment, not money to them.

Responding to these kinds of player, then, means you have to play ABC 123 poker. No bells and whistles, as they won’t be appreciated. Bluffing and ‘making moves’ is often just like throwing your chips out of the window, as if you don’t have the hand, you aren’t going to win. Going back to basics, however, and playing tight, aggressive poker, can quickly have you raking in their easy come easy go chips.

Trips vs. a Set

Posted by admin on April 28th, 2009 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

A poker online hand with three matched cards, such as 7 7 7, is often a winner at the casino. Texas Hold ‘Em players are thrilled when they flop three matching cards. But not all threesomes are the same.

There are two types of three-card hands in poker and poker online. Even though they contain the same cards, QQQ, is much different if two of the Queens are in your hand than if two of the cards are on the board.

When you hold a pocket pair that the board completes with a third, you have made a “set.” If the board provides two cards to match one of yours, then you have hit “trips.”

A set is actually a much more powerful hand, and more likely to win than trips. Even though three of a kind is a strong, winning hand, if two of the cards are on the board, its potential is diminished. First of all, everyone can see the two cards out there. Any savvy poker knows to fold if the board pairs and makes no connection to their pocket cards, so there are fewer chips going into the pot.

With a paired board, it’s also possible for someone else to make a full house. That is why a set is so powerful. It is difficult to put anyone on a set. It is an ambush hand. And a set can complete to a full house or even quads - a circumstance that might also give your opponent a good, but second best hand.

Be careful with trips and very observant of your opponents. With a set, you are better positioned to slow play and deceive your opponents into contributing more to the pot.
