The Untold Truth About Mentors, and Why You DON’T Need “ONE”

Posted by admin on August 27th, 2008 — Posted in Marketers Center

The Untold Truth About Mentors, and Why You DON’T Need “ONE” - by David Riklan I think there is a misconception about what a mentor truly is. A mentor is someone who guides you, someone wise, someone you trust. A mentor can be your confidant, advisor, coach, or even your role model. Many people swear by their mentors and frequently credit them with much of their success.

Yet you do not have to choose just one! The mentor-protégé bond is certainly a special one, but this does not mean you are limited to the knowledge of only a single source. In the early years of my adult life, I was hoping to find just one person to guide me and direct me, but I never did find that person.

Over time, a few things became clear to me:

1.There is no single person who can provide us with every answer. So why abide by one mentor who you know cannot meet every requirement? I discovered that I could learn more, not by following the advice of a single person but by observing a multitude of people.

2.There is no perfect role model. I used to believe there was such a person and that I would simply model myself after him. All I would have to do is watch and do the things he or she did. Unfortunately, I haven’t met that person yet.

3.There is no perfect person. Very few people possess all of the qualities that I think define success and happiness: great friends, career, health, family life, finances, social life, leisure, spiritual life, community involvement, etc. Most of the very successful people I’ve met had one or some of these, but hardly any had all of them. So why compare myself to the perfect person who doesn’t exist?

4.I didn’t have all of the answers, and I never will. I knew that I was going to make mistakes, but what I discovered was that it was much easier to learn from other people’s mistakes than to make all of the mistakes myself.

To me, my mentor had to:

—Take a personal interest in my development and support me in the avenues I take. —Help me strive toward the highest of aspirations, not only in career but in the satisfaction of life. —Want to share his knowledge and experiences, in hope that I reach a high level of achievement. —Show me the need to fulfill all responsibilities, both at home and away from it. —Care about the well-being of himself and his family. —Be a great overall example.

Needless to say, I still haven’t found that one mentor yet.

Since I couldn’t find that one special person to guide me, I needed to create a mentor. Now, how does one go about doing something like that? Well, it’s not as hard as it seems. You first have to determine what you want. That is most important, not only because it’s part of the mentor process but because it directly concerns what will make you happy in life.

Once you figure out what you want, find the people that have it or know how to get it and make sure they are willing to teach you how to get it. You don’t even have to know them personally. As your mentors, they can teach you through a variety of ways: books, audio tapes, lectures, seminars, etc. A mentor then can have millions of protégés.

Here is some additional advice in finding mentors:

1.You can learn from practically anybody. In essence, anybody can be your mentor. Not only can you learn what to do or how to behave, you can also learn to avoid the wrong paths that others have followed.

2.Identify the key people in your life. Mentors can be close family members like parents or siblings, and they can also be public figures. Again, don’t believe that you have to have a close relationship with your mentors. Public figures can be key people in your life because they can have a profound effect on how you live it.

3.Find people with specialized knowledge. If certain people have written an insightful book on a particular subject or have inspirational life experiences to share, then they might be possible mentors who can help in motivating you. Plus, if they are famous, they are easy to watch via television or the Internet, and their material is not difficult to find.

4.Try to ask as much as possible. Ask people for advice, ask them how they got where they are, ask them how you can get the same things. Also ask yourself what certain people would say or how they would act in specific situations. The more prepared you are, the less likely you’ll make a mistake in the future.

5.Mentors can simply be people who are happy in life! Salary and position don’t matter as long as there is contentment and commitment. Mentors can range from athletes and politicians to religious figures and stay-at-home mothers.

I have hundreds of mentors. So how many do you have?

The Low Carb Craze and Other Dieting Mistakes

Posted by admin on August 27th, 2008 — Posted in Marketers Center

Dear BMTers,

Low carb this and low carb that…that’s all you hear nowadays. Kinda reminds me of something that was the craze a few years ago…The Low or No Fat Craze…Can you remember where that got us? Still Fat!!!

Well my friends this Low Carb Craze is going to bring us to the same exact place…Yep…Still Fat!

Listen, anyone who tries Low carb dieting will experience some Short Term success…but it’s only short term.

I know some of you are tired of hearing me repeat myself but any diet or exercise machine in and of itself will not work!

A successful Fitness Program must incorporate 5 Strategies:

1. A Compelling Reason to Change

2. Proper Nutrition

3. Progressive Resistance Training

4. Moderate Aerobic Exercise

5. Consistency

If you’re missing any one of these strategies you will not experience the success that you crave.

Why the Low Carb diets without Progressive Resistance Training will not work in the long run.

We need to build lean muscle on our bodies.

Why do we need to build lean muscle on our bodies? Building lean muscle will boost metabolism and that is what we want to achieve.

You’ll even start burning more calories even while you rest.
Right now I’m going to let you in on one of the biggest secrets on burning fat ever revealed:

Lean Muscle Burns Fat!

And, the more lean muscle you have, the more fat you will burn. That is a statement that you can take to the bank! I guarantee it!

Listen, all these people that go on these Fad diets are really losing water and lean muscle weight.

They Are Not Losing Any Fat Whatsoever!

How can they be if I just got finished telling you that in order for us to lose any fat,(and I did mean any fat!) you must have lean muscle tissue for the fat to go be burned up in?

Our bodies are smart; our fat just can’t go away it must be burned up in a muscle cell.

And if you’re not doing any Progressive Weight Resistance Training, well then, you’re not building any new lean muscle tissue.

Which means, you guessed it…you won’t be burning fat any time soon!!!

Don’t you see? The people that go on these Fad (starvation) diets turn into “skinny fat” people. Sure they lose weight, but they lose the wrong kind of weight.

Since these people usually don’t perform any weight resistance training and are only probably taking diet pills, and doing hours of aerobic exercise, they are losing water (from the low calorie, low carb diet) and lean muscle (from doing to much aerobic exercise and not having the right amount and the proper ratios of food in their bodies).

So what is left?

FAT!!!

They have no muscle tone whatsoever!
What these people should be doing is learning how to lift weights and get stronger progressively! The only way to do that is…

Get A Little Stronger Each And Every Workout
If you’re not getting stronger each and every workout than you are doing something wrong!

Then all you have to do is add: A Compelling Reason to Change, Proper Nutrition, Moderate Aerobic Exercise, and Consistency to be Successful

A great example of dieting the wrong way in my opinion is Anna Nicole Smith’s recent “weight loss”.

From a distance she looks great! But get closer and clear the smoke and you will find that she transformed herself into what I explained before a “skinny fat person”.

Did you hear her interviewed lately on shows like Larry King Live and Regis and Kelly?

She says she takes Trim Spa’s Ephedra Free Diet Pills. And she eats like only once per day if she’s lucky. And I would bet my life, kids, wife, and the house that she never ever does a workout with weights on a consistent basis!!!

So let’s see what happened…

Most people think that to lose excess body fat, they must stop eating altogether. This is where they are totally wrong. Starvation…(what else would you call not eating?) triggers a metabolic response where, your metabolism will actually slow down and become more efficient in order to preserve body tissue in the case of a shortage of future nutrition.

This is precisely what we don’t want. Another way people think they’re “eating right” is having fruit & coffee for breakfast, a salad for lunch, and a bowl of pasta for dinner. - Nope, that’s not the answer either. Some people don’t eat anything the whole day and “save themselves” for a big huge dinner! That’s not the answer either.

To find the answer, you have to think back to caveman days. Back then, there were no supermarkets or convenience stores to easily get whatever you want and whenever you want it.

The caveman didn’t know when his next meal was coming. He only ate when he made the big kill and would literally gorge and overstuff himself until he couldn’t move! Why? Because he knew that he might not eat again for days or even worse…weeks.

What this did was make our bodies very bad at processing our food. Since our bodies didn’t know when we were going to eat next, they were forced to revert into something known as…

“Survival Mode”

Whenever you eat, your digestive system converts most of your food…(especially large amounts of carbohydrates) to glucose (blood sugar). It’s a very complicated process but I’ll do my best to sum it up in a nutshell…

Anytime we eat while were in “survival mode,” because of the molasses-pace the metabolism is at, the body converts most of the glucose…in conjunction with the hormone insulin…to fat. This is why people who constantly starve themselves can gain weight while eating only once a day!

We’d like to speed up our metabolism, but unfortunately over thousands and thousands of years our bodies haven’t changed much from the days of the cave man. Every time we eat, our bodies are already automatically going to convert it to fat…even if it’s fat free! Where’s the justice???
So how do we change our body from fat storer to fat burner? We have to learn to use proper nutrition.

So the question is…what is proper nutrition? OK… in a nutshell, my idea of proper nutrition is 4 to 5 portion-controlled, balanced meals about every 3 hours throughout the day.

By eating this way throughout the day, you’ll effortlessly speed up your metabolism. Think of it this way. If you have a campfire burning and you don’t add wood to the fire, eventually the campfire will burn out.

But if you add a little wood every few hours, the campfire will continue to burn, and burn nice and hot! So you see, the human metabolism is like the fire…never or rarely feed it, and it will slow down. Feed it every few hours and it has no choice but to speed up.

What Is A Portion-Controlled Meal You Ask?

A portion-controlled meal is sensible portion of a lean protein, a sensible portion of a starchy carbohydrate, and a sensible portion of a fibrous carbohydrate.

Lean protein foods:

- Skinless chicken breast

- Skinless turkey breast

- Tuna fish

- Most fish in general

- Egg whites

- Protein powder

Starchy carbohydrates:

- Sweet potato

- Potato

- Rice

- Pasta

- Oatmeal

- Whole grain wheat bread

Fibrous Carbohydrates:

- Corn

- Broccoli

- Cauliflower

- Asparagus

- Peppers

Here are a few examples of a portion-controlled meal:

Chicken breast with corn & rice

Lean steak with potato & broccoli

Fish with rice & salad

Chicken pita sandwich

Egg white omelet with mushrooms & oatmeal or farina

A “typical” day of eating on Bare Minimum Training might be :

7:00am: egg white omelet and oatmeal

10:00am: yogurt with cottage cheese

1:00 pm: tuna pita sandwich

4:00 pm: mushroom turkey burger on a whole grain bun

7:00 pm: Salmon with rice

8 8-ounce glasses of spring water (throughout entire day)

So you see if Anna Nicole Smith does not start to implement Proper Nutrition and a sound fitness program like Bare Minimum Training…

She’s setting yourself up for Failure…sure she has short term success but eventually she’ll gain all the weight back!!!
I hope she doesn’t gain the weight back…but she must change her ways if there’s any hope for long term success.

Take care,

Entrepreneurial Business Plan The Down And Dirty Way

Posted by admin on August 24th, 2008 — Posted in Marketers Center

Does the idea of running your own business sound exciting? Do you have a business up and running and want to take it to the next level?

After coaching hundreds of entrepreneurs at various stages of their evolution, I’ve found that the answers to these 5 questions can make or break any endeavor. Of course there are lots of other areas that must be addressed, however these will get you moving in the right direction quickly.

Shhh, don’t tell anyone. Once you have these answers, you’ve created a basic and relatively painless (dare I say it?) Down and Dirty Business Plan.

Are you ready? Go for it!

1. What problem do you solve?

You MUST begin here. If you don’t know what problem you solve, you don’t have a snowball’s chance. What real need do your potential customers/clients have that isn’t be fully addressed yet? Where’s their pain?

2. For whom do you solve it? or What is your niche?

In today’s economy, the best (many say the only) way to market your goods or services is to be very specific about targeting your potential customers. You can locate them, they can find you, and others can refer to you. This is scary for most entrepreneurs because it means saying “No” to some people. Let it go. It works!

3. Who’s your competition?

It’s time to become a stealth researcher. Who else is doing anything like what you’re doing? What’s their niche? How do they market? What do they charge? How long have they been in business? How are they unique?

4. How will you market your business?

Study your competition. What’s working for them? Model their success. Improve it. Think outside the box. Where does your niche hang out? Will you network, place ads in local papers, or do some PR? How about using Google pay per clicks?

5. Why you?

Why will your potential customers go to you instead of the competition? What makes you uniquely qualified to solve their problem(s)? Is there a specific solution you have that they don’t? Can you be more cost effective and/or efficient? Is your service unparalleled? If you don’t know why they’d choose you, your market won’t know why either!

So there you have it - your Down and Dirty Business Plan. Feel free to revisit your answers and tweak them as you take in new information and experiences.

Take care of business and remember to have fun! Suz

How To Choose The Proper Business Entity?

Posted by admin on August 21st, 2008 — Posted in Marketers Center

Choosing your business structure is just as important - if not more important - than marketing. You should consult with your accountant or your attorney in forming your business. The process in setting up your company is as follows; these are just the key points that need to be done, but not necessarily in the exact order listed.

First, you need to come up with a company name and ascertain if the URL is available for that website. If the URL is available for that name, the next step is to register that name with the Secretary of State in the state that you reside in. At this point, there are two options: One is to consult with your accountant or CPA to decide if you should be a sole proprietor, partnership, limited liability corporation or a Corporation. At the very least, reserve the name with your Secretary of State for a minimal fee while you decide what business entity you should be.

Here are the four types of business structures and a brief explanation of each:

1. Sole Proprietor - A Sole Proprietorship is one individual or married couple in business alone. Sole proprietorships are the most common form of business structure. This type of business is simple to form and operate, and may enjoy greater flexibility of management, less legal regulation, and fewer taxes. However, the business owner is personally liable for all debts incurred by the business.

2. Partnership - A General Partnership is composed of two or more persons (usually not a married couple) who agree to contribute money, labor, and/or skills to a business. Each partner shares the profits, losses and management of the business, and each partner is personally and equally liable for debts of the partnership. Formal terms of the partnership are usually contained in a written partnership agreement.

3. Limited Liability Corporation - A Limited Liability Company (LLC) is composed of one or more individuals or entities through a special written agreement. The agreement includes: provisions for management, ability to assign interests and distribution of profits and losses. Limited liability companies are permitted to engage in any lawful, for-profit business or activity other than banking or insurance. LLC’s cannot have more than 35 shareholders.

4. Corporation - A Corporation is a more complex business structure. As a chartered legal entity, a corporation has certain rights, privileges and liabilities beyond those of an individual. Doing business as a corporation may yield tax or financial benefits, but these can be offset by other considerations, such as increased licensing fees or decreased personal control. Corporations may be formed for profit or nonprofit purposes.

As you can see, each entity is somewhat different. In my opinion, I would either be a limited liability corporation or Corporation. There is a little bit more record keeping involved for a corporation, but is by far, well worth the time and effort that you expend. I attended to a financial seminar about 15 years ago and I learned that if I could take advantage of every deduction there was as, just a regular working person, I might only be eligible for 70 different deductions. If I owned a home there were a little over a hundred deductions. If I was in business for myself there were close to 200 available deductions. Here is where things changed: if I were a corporation, there were well over 300 deductions!

So, the moral of the story is this; if you can be a corporation, be a corporation, BUT you absolutely must talk to your accountant or attorney before you make a determination of which business entity you should be.

How to Know If Your Brochure Works

Posted by admin on August 20th, 2008 — Posted in Marketers Center

Nothing in the business world is easy. Everything has to be done with hard work, purpose and good strategy.

Let’s face it, most promotional materials especially brochures end up in the basket. Most companies spend their time writing everything about the company in the brochure instead of focusing on their services and products and its benefits. This is why most readers would not read beyond the cover of the brochure and instead toss it in their storage basket. This is the common mistake that businesses often commit - an often costly mistake. Thus, the headline and cover page should be given the same if not much attention as you would give to the inside pages.

So let’s say you were able to create a good headline and cover page, is it enough? How would you know that your brochure is really able to encourage readers to respond? The best thing to do is ask yourself, your customers, prospects and acquaintances. Ask if you were able to create a brochure that looks professional and pushes readers to contact you. If your brochure looks like it was printed off a bad printer, your prospects will lack confidence in you and would scout off for other stores. Also, determine if your brochure answers the questions of the readers. If not, know what is lacking. And remember to include more information the next time you print your brochure. Include also information about your company but do not focus much on it. Just tell the readers what they need to know about you.

Ask also if your brochure is able to prompt prospects to make some action. This means encouraging them to call, stop by your store, e-mail you or request more information from you. Additionally, find out if you are able to give your reader a reason to keep the brochure even if they are not interested in your products right now. How can you do this? You can put recipes at the back of the brochure if you know that most of your customers are women or you can put a calendar in it. On top of this, ask yourself whether readers are able to easily find the contact information. Make sure that you put your phone number, e-mail address and website in easy-to-find places. A reader would not waste his time searching through the whole brochure to find your contact information. They would never make that call if they get frustrated and that is a big loss for you.

Understand that people buy from people they feel comfortable with. Thus, when you are able to send off a professional and comfy feeling to your prospects with your brochure it would be easier for you to make that big sale.

As an expert in a particular niche, you have visitors coming back to your site to get more information and updates on your area of specialty. A great way to capitalize upon this and to gain new visitors is to create a newsletter.

Use an opt-in sign up box on your website, and place it prominently in many places on your site. Once you have received a sign-up, make sure you automatically send an email to the address provided to confirm the subscription, and give the recipient an easy way to opt out if, for instance someone else provided their address and they’re not interested. Structuring the first issue is the hardest, but once you get the format set, it takes far less time and effort each time. Here are a few guidelines:

Don’t use it as a blatant advertisement. Yes, you do promote the products and services of merchants or advertisers, but give them something of value, or they’ll opt out immediately, and you won’t see them back on your site again either.

Show people how to do something new, do something better, or make money. Tips are great and you can re-purpose them in other forms.
Include case studies of others using your product, taking action related to the subject of your site.

Give updates of information they would not be likely to get elsewhere. Or give your viewpoint on how specific events are likely to affect your niche group.

Publish answers to questions you’ve received from visitors to your website. Website questions as a barometer of the interests and problems of your site visitors. Staying relevant means addressing them.
Ask others to write articles for your newsletter. Many authorities will want the exposure.

I wrote an article 2 months ago trying to rally some support for the research for Mental Health Disorders. My main theme was for people to donate to Non-Profit Organization, just $1.00. I mean a Freaking dollar to help people on low income that have a mental health disorder. Now I pointed out the fact that millions were given to the victims of hurricane Katrina.

For some odd reason two months later not ONE GOD DAM DOLLAR WAS DONATED I tried to rally the troops and still no one even could give a measly dollar. Do you realize the new surgeon general report says 1 in 5 Americans will come down with a mental illness in some point in there life and this used to be 1 in 20, I would say that was close to an epidemic, that’s millions more than the victims of the hurricane, yet the city still SLEEPS.

Now what I want you all to know is this, on every cancer patient and heart disease they spend on 1 patient $25 dollars of research, heart disease 1 patient $23 research and the list goes on and on. Now do you want to know the God’s truth? For every 1 Mentally Ill patient they spend, hold on to your hat 1 big huge dollar that’s it! Now I think you can see what is happening here, one lousy dollar for each patient for research.

Now what are we going to do about it? I will make a plea to all those that are reading this please donate $1 measly dollar to this non profit organization, let’s help people get medicine and also raise awareness that we need to be spending billions on a cure and medicine to improve the quality of lives of all the mentally ill. Please forward this to as many people as you possibly can, my goal is to raise $2,000,000 BY THE END OF 2006. Now here is my cell phone # 567-219-0994, any questions that you need answered please do not hesitate to call and I’ll share with you the details of the non profit organization Out of Darkness and what we are trying to do to make a difference in the mental health field.

So please skip the doughnut this Sunday and send $1 to our Pay Pal Account. outof_darkness@yahoo.com now if I weren’t serious why would I give my cell phone # to the whole world to see? Yes, call me I’ll take the time to let you know where we stand and the exciting things we are doing on the front lines to make solid changes for the better of Mental Health Disorders! So please put that extra cheeseburger down, send us a dollar, and know that you had an effect on someone with an emotional problem.

No different from cancer or heart disease and I must remind you of the fact that research is $20 to $25 per patient. Mental health disorders $1 per patients, that is sad, please pass this along to all those that you may know who can afford to donate a dollar and just know that the next person to get a mental health disorder, could be your son or daughter. Then you will be wondering were is that big huge dollar they are going to spend on my loved one going to come from and then at that point you will wish they would give $25 per patient for research, yet they hand you a dollar and say good luck! America Deserves better, get out your wallet NOW and give a dollar. If you don’t have a pay pal account send your dollar to Out of Darkness 43 Oakwood Ave. Suite 1012 Huron, Oh, 44839

Respect Goes A Long, Long Way

Posted by admin on August 9th, 2008 — Posted in Marketers Center

Have you ever stopped for a moment to truly define what it
means to respect someone? As I recall my own life-altering
experiences, heart-breaking mistakes, and valuable
lessons, I know I’ve learned a lot about respect. Hopefully
you’ll agree with what I’m about to say: When you truly
respect someone, you don’t lie to them, cheat on them,
demean them, steal from them, speak badly about them, try
to control them, invade their privacy, ignore what’s important
to them, or want anything less for them than their most
glorious dreams.

At the heart of every successful relationship — business or
personal — lies respect. The truth also lies at the opposite
end, that the heart of every doomed relationship lies
disrespect. If you’re in a relationship in which you either
don’t respect the other person or aren’t respected by the
other person, I assure you this is a relationship you have to
learn from and leave, it’s that simple. And the sooner the
better, too, since I’m a big believer that the longer you
postpone the inevitable, the more time in this life you waste.
The more you think about it the more you’ll realize that
without respect, all those other important ingredients of a
good relationship such as love and trust don’t mean much,
or they can’t exist at all. The extraordinary thing about
respect is that when it exists, in its deepest and most
honest form, it eliminates a lot of the destructive behavior
that can tear apart a relationship and the people in it.

On a more personal note, if you happen to be in an intimate
relationship in which you’re being chronically disrespected,
please don’t fall into the trap of believing that if you hang
around long enough, putting up with any and all disrespect
from your partner, it will somehow prove to your partner how
much you care; and then someday, the depth of your love
finally realized, you’ll earn the respect you’ve been longing
for. Sadly, that’s not usually the outcome, for a simple,
logical reason: You never earn respect by tolerating
disrespect.

Other people’s ideals, beliefs or way of living can be
different from yours and what you know to be true for
yourself. So please do not mistake someone as
“disrespectful” just because they didn’t, simply put, live up to
your expectations. Also, people can act negatively possibly
due to matters of their own such as dealings with
insecurities, health factors, chemical imbalance, fear,
greed, anger and so on; these are challenges they could be
battling to reach their better Self; it’s not always about you —
so don’t take it personally. Nevertheless you still have to
decide if that’s a healthy situation to allow yourself to be a
part of; this is where you have to use your better judgement
(your innate intelligence otherwise known as your intuition).
You could use the old excuse that the other person “didn’t
mean to” disrespect you. Even if that was truly the case, do
you think it would be a wise decision to “stick around” and
be consumed in a negative situation? How will “sticking
around” serve your better purpose? You are ultimately the
decision-maker whether you want to “stick around” to be
either intentionally or unintentionally disrespected. Another
person’s behavior to disrespect you is truly your own
dilemma if you choose to remain and accept. If you know
your self worth, you wouldn’t leave any room for disrespect
in your life — from whichever perspective, and at whatever
caliber.

The fundamental ingredients of respect and trust are the
foundation for all successful relationships whether
acquaintance, family, lover, friend, or business; therefore the
approach to respect applies to all relationships. Difficult as
it is, there’s one thing you can do to earn respect from a
person who’s in the habit of disrespecting you. You have to
distance yourself from them, not just emotionally or
mentally, but physically. Don’t threaten to leave unless you
mean it, and when you mean it, do it. If you can’t do it for
yourself and your precious spirit that deserves respect, do it
for the other person, and the lesson they need to learn that
for every act of disrespect, there really is a price to pay.
