Check the Money Monthly

Posted by admin on November 18th, 2009 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

We have all heard about the value of good bankroll management. It makes us better, happier, and less impoverished poker players. But do you know that your bankroll is not the only one that you should be watching? You should be checking on your casino’s bankroll. Most poker casinos will post monthly audits and reports so that their players can check in on how they are doing. The recent trend to post this information is part of a larger move in the casino world towards increased transparency in all gaming operations. Look around at your favorite poker online casino to see if you can find the monthly audit. It is important that you realize that casinos are not under any obligation to post monthly reports. It is completely up to the casino’s prerogative to decide whether they want to give their players a peak at the finances. The good casinos do this as a service their players. These are the casinos that you should play at because they obviously care about you as a consumer. Don’t waste your time with casinos that are not willing to provide you with the hard financial facts that you need to see how much they are taking out of your bankroll. Transparency is always the best option.

On Playing against a Non-Attentive Player

Posted by admin on June 2nd, 2009 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

In all of the poker books and all of the discussion of poker theory out there, there often is a great overlying assumption that your opponent has some consideration or care for playing ‘correctly’ in the game. That is: you assume your opponent, like you, wants to put his money in good, and not gamble against supreme odds. You also might assume that your opponent can catch on to basic strategic concepts, in that they will known when the four to the flush on the board hits and you are betting, you might likely have it.

These kinds of assumptions, though, can go out the window in poker games where the players are entirely playing their cards alone (and often not playing them well!). Many players give absolutely no consideration to what kind of ‘fancy poker moves’ you are making, or any other ideas such as pot odds, implied odds, or etc. Instead, they just want to play, and see the cards come down. Often the money and the winning is just a side-effect for these people. It’s entertainment, not money to them.

Responding to these kinds of player, then, means you have to play ABC 123 poker. No bells and whistles, as they won’t be appreciated. Bluffing and ‘making moves’ is often just like throwing your chips out of the window, as if you don’t have the hand, you aren’t going to win. Going back to basics, however, and playing tight, aggressive poker, can quickly have you raking in their easy come easy go chips.

Trips vs. a Set

Posted by admin on April 28th, 2009 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

A poker online hand with three matched cards, such as 7 7 7, is often a winner at the casino. Texas Hold ‘Em players are thrilled when they flop three matching cards. But not all threesomes are the same.

There are two types of three-card hands in poker and poker online. Even though they contain the same cards, QQQ, is much different if two of the Queens are in your hand than if two of the cards are on the board.

When you hold a pocket pair that the board completes with a third, you have made a “set.” If the board provides two cards to match one of yours, then you have hit “trips.”

A set is actually a much more powerful hand, and more likely to win than trips. Even though three of a kind is a strong, winning hand, if two of the cards are on the board, its potential is diminished. First of all, everyone can see the two cards out there. Any savvy poker knows to fold if the board pairs and makes no connection to their pocket cards, so there are fewer chips going into the pot.

With a paired board, it’s also possible for someone else to make a full house. That is why a set is so powerful. It is difficult to put anyone on a set. It is an ambush hand. And a set can complete to a full house or even quads - a circumstance that might also give your opponent a good, but second best hand.

Be careful with trips and very observant of your opponents. With a set, you are better positioned to slow play and deceive your opponents into contributing more to the pot.

Online Poker Player of Year 2008

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2009 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

Online poker players not only compete for money, but for Card Player’s “Online Player of the Year” award. The winner in 2008 was Alex Kamberis, whose screen name is “AJKHoosier1.”

He was 22-years old when he was named the winner, and lives in Bloomington, Indiana in the U.S. The award is based on points accumulated for tournaments won and earnings achieved by the players. Alex took off early in 2008 by winning big in several re-buy tournaments. During the summer, he entered a Full Tilt tournament with a prize pool of $750,000 US and finished second to earn $134,895.

Kamberis also made numerous final online poker tables during the year, helping him to rack up even more points. His entry into a major online poker tournament with a $5,000+200 buy-in was instrumental in winning the award. There were 2,185 players, and a prize pool of over $10million US. Although he took several bad beats, he made it to the final table, and won third place, which put him way ahead of other OPOY contenders. This was his largest cash prize for the year, making up more than fifty percent of his total online earnings of $1.7+ million dollars.

Not only did he make substantial money, but he racked up 9,424 points along the way to win the title, and be named “Online Player of the Year” by Card Player Magazine. Congratulations to Alex!

Video Poker: Take Your Time

Posted by admin on January 12th, 2009 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

One of the greatest perks of video poker is that there is no time limit. Table play is very fast, so that is typically not an option for new players who have to think out every move. To some extent online poker is also timed, because the online casino can recognize when you are taking too long to make a decision. Any time when you are playing against other people there is a time pressures situation. You need to make decisions fast; otherwise you could be faced with a lot of grumpy players.

However, video poker is completely time limit free. There are no other players to aggravate, so you can take as long as you want making a decision about your cards. It is completely pressure free in that respect. This makes it a perfect game for beginners who need the extra time, or people who just prefer a slower game. As a nice added perk, the slower you play, the longer your money will last. Playing slowly is a great way to stretch you bucks over a long night. You could also slip down into playing one or two coins at a time if you really want to make sure that you stay in the game for as long as possible.

Bluffing in Poker

Posted by admin on December 8th, 2008 — Posted in A Funny Farm, Internet Gambling, Life Of Games

A lot of people say that they play honest, that they don’t bluff at all. These people are either liars or poor poker players.

Bluffing is a scary part of poker, but without it, it’d pretty much be a slot game. The fun of playing poker is the ability to lie to make other people do what you want. In this case, what you want is for them to give you their money.

Basically, poker is a microcosm for life in general. Just kidding.

It can be intimidating to bluff, especially because in most cases you’re putting money at risk when you’re fairly certain that you don’t have a winning hand. Keep this in mind, however-with the proper bluff, any hand can be the best one (ooh…). Learn to bluff and bluff well, and you’ll keep your opponents guessing.

At it’s most basic, the situation for the poker bluff has three ingredients: The bluffer, the sucker, and the payoff.

The bluffer is hopefully you, wanting the cash in the pot, but aware that your cards probably aren’t good enough to get it. The sucker is anyone else in the hand. They’ve got money in the pot, and they aim to get a return on their investment. Your goal is to thwart that goal. And the payoff-the cash in the pot, if you play your cards right, it’ll be yours.

All you need to do is act as if you’ve got the hand that’ll win. If there’s a draw on the board, act as if you’ve got it.

Sound simple, but after the basics, the mind games start, and then it’s all up to your discretion.

You need to keep in mind that how the others play will determine whether or not a pot is ripe for a bluff. If there are a lot of players in, and people keep betting, someone probably has a hand. If you don’t, it may be better to get out. If there’s a lot of checking and feeler bets coming out, it may be the right time to try to scare everyone out of the pot.

Then you need to decide how to scare everyone out of the hand. Do you go over the top with an all in? Do you place a fairly high bet and try to look like you want the others to bet?

Again it depends on the table. Know the players, and you’ll know when to make your move.
