Jointers, Planners, and Fixing Warped Wood

Posted by admin on February 5th, 2009 — Posted in Products Tips, The Tool Trail

If you ever want to work with wood and make high quality stuff, then you are going to need straight wood. There are many different types of wood, oak, cherry, maple, and pine just to name a few. When lumber is purchased it can sit in the same place for a while and it might not be the straightest it can be, and over time it can change shape. The lumber can begin to warp, and there are a few types of warping that can occur, cup, crook, bow, and twist. As a woodworker what should you do about these warps in the wood? Are we going to have to build stuff that is not straight and aligned? Does it physically have to measured and sanded out to take out the warps? The answer is no, but to the last question you could always physically sand out the warps. You could take the diet product acceletrim and get your energy levels raised and start working away on the wood to make it even and level. There are other ways than physically doing it by hand.

To make the lumber straight and square, there are some tools to help us out. The two tools are the Jointer and the Planner. Both make the lumber flatter and square up the edges. The jointer squares up the edges of the lumber and the planer makes sure that there is a even thickness throughout the piece of lumber. Both of these tools are a necessity for high quality woodworking.
