If you’re looking to buy a new home and you have school-aged children, the quality of the school systems in the towns or cities you’re considering needs to be a major component of your decision making process. As you’re looking for homes, be sure you research the schools, both public and private, in the region where you’ll be living.
First, what sort of school would you like for your children? Does one of your kids want to seriously pursue athletics? Then a school with a strong team sports culture might be a perfect fit for that child. If your child is not an athlete, you may want a school system with more emphasis on health and individual physical development, with many options for non-athletes, and less emphasis on team sports.
Do you have a budding genius in the family? An honors program or advanced placement program is a plus. Do you have a special needs child, or one who needs just a bit of extra help? A school with a solid special ed program and lots of built-in support for every child would be a good fit. Is your child artistic? Pay attention to a school’s arts and music programs, and the variety of course offerings and extracurricular activities for students. Some schools offer the bare minimum, while others have a rich selection of activities for kids. Once you’ve defined your children’s needs in terms of a school, you’re ready to ask questions.
Your Realtor may very well have a lot of information on the schools in his or her area, and information from the real estate agency is a good start; but you need to go beyond that. State and local governments should offer basic information on the supervisory unions in the area; many of them supply information on the Internet. Once you’ve identified a contact person at the supervisory union, make appointment to meet and quiz him or her about each school in the district. The staff of the supervisory unions will often have a good sense of the atmosphere and learning culture in each school, and when asked specific questions, should be able to suggest a school compatible with your child’s needs.
Once you’ve gotten an inkling of the schools you’ve like to explore, make arrangements to visit each school and meet with the principals. It’s a good idea to prepare questions in advance; some suggestions are to ask about the academic programs, and in the case of high school, any vocational training or guidance available. Beyond that, consider the following: Does the school have a written policy on bullying and cliques? Is there a variety of extracurricular activities for different students, and active encouragement for all students to become involved in the school? Or is there a dominant football or basketball culture that leaves a lot of kids on the sidelines?
Safety and security are surely important issues; does the school deal with these issues by enforcing a strict disciplinary code, or by creating an atmosphere of acceptance and diversity?
Talk to members of the local PTA to find out how the school administrators and the school board deal with parent concerns. If you’ve got time before your move, subscribe to the local newspaper and follow local issues regarding school. And, if you can, connect with former and current students, and get their view of the school; kids’ opinions are often very different from the official viewpoint, and need to be taken into account.
With kids in school, a big part of family life is going to be centered around issues of learning, extracurricular activities, and school culture. Doing some research on the school systems, and finding a house in a district where you have a positive impression of the schools your children are going to be attending, will increase the chances that living in your new community will be a positive experience.

The following is an excerpt from “Thriving in the 21st Century: Preparing Our Children for the New Economic Reality,” due out in 2006 from Cardamom Publishers
How does Google find employees, and what does that have to do with homeschoolers?
I’ll get to the second part of that question shortly, but first let me tell you a bit about Google. If you’ve spent any time at all on the Web, you know that Google.com is a powerful and popular Internet search engine. The company responsible for that site is also known as Google, and it is growing rapidly. Google employed fewer than 700 people two years ago; today there are nearly 2,700 Google employees. Such rapid growth required an innovative yet efficient approach for finding qualified engineers to program the Google search engine; Google rose to the challenge.
In an economy that has not been kind to many technical workers, word of available jobs at a young and growing company like Google brings swarms of people from all over the country and beyond. How can any company sift through so many applications and resumes in order to find the right people in a reasonable amount of time? The traditional resume-then-interview sequence would take far too long.
The powers that be at Google came up with a system that breaks free of traditional hiring practices and brings the right people to their doorstep quickly and easily. It includes placing aptitude tests in “geek” magazines including “Physics Today” and “Mensa,” resulting in a flood of answers sent in by candidates.
Google also buys space on billboards in Silicon Valley, posting on them only the phrase “(first 10-digit prime found in consecutive digits of e).com”, with no mention of the company itself. Whoever figures out the answer ends up at a site with a puzzle on it. Those who successfully solve the puzzle are then sent to a site where Google accepts resumes. Puzzles and challenges like these are irresistible to the brainiacs that are desired by Google, and they respond even if they didn’t intend to look for a new job. Google uses these tactics to attract the quality applicants needed for its continued success. The beauty of this system is that Google has broken free of traditional hiring practices in order to construct a system that brings qualified potential employees to its doors efficiently and in a reasonable amount of time. So what does this have to do with homeschooling?
Everything! The “let’s try something different” mindset thriving at Google is also at home in the home. Homeschooled kids learn to think for themselves while learning about what interests them, instead of being told what to do along with 25 or 30 (or more) others who are assigned to do the exact same thing in the exact same way. Homeschoolers don’t spend their youth held captive in one building all day, being encouraged to “fit in” and “go along to get along.” They have the time and the freedom to try things, to succeed or fail, and to try something else.
That freedom is a must for anyone who would innovate. Master innovator Thomas Edison, with his 1,093 patents (and inventions too numerous to list) spent much of his youth learning on his own. According to Blaine McCormick, author of “At Work with Thomas Edison,” the inventor “….deplored formal education. He believed it ruined your ability to think. To Edison, the ABC’s of education stood for “Avoid Being Creative.” “
As we rejoin the global economy, where Americans are faced with competitors in other countries who will work for far less money than we will, we must become innovators in order to survive. Workers in other countries may end up making the things we used to make, but they will still look to us when determining what to make, as long as we continue to set the trends by coming up with new products and ideas. Our country’s economic future depends on our children’s ability to be creative, to come up with new ideas and implement them. By homeschooling them, we equip them to bring about a prosperous future.

I asked my friend who works for an online college. Why online degrees are becoming popular, even the best Institutions have started offering online education in the last few years. His answer was shocking and I could not believe what he said. He replied, “People love Internet and that’s why they spend a lot of time searching, reading, listening, chatting or writing on it. To make excuses to themselves or to their social surroundings they want to cement their newfound friendship with something tangible.
Most students are still skeptical about online degrees but it gives them an excuse to be online whenever they want. If you hear the questions they ask you will be surprised. Most of them are just worried about spending money and ask again and again, “is it worth it” in different ways.
The result is they want to be online; they want everyone else to believe that they are doing something important and not just wasting time on it. That’s why they take admission but instead of working hard and finishing course quickly, they are taking much longer then necessary.
It is acceptable anyway, because it makes them happy, the best thing is, they don’t have to finish the course in a set period of time, in most cases. To tell you the truth they do not expect a lot at the end from an online degree. For some strange reasons they are sure that they will get a degree anyway, which might not be the case for some students. First and foremost in their mind is the fact that they are doing something important in the eyes of others. If they actually understand the importance and worth of online degree they would be shocked with stunning clarity. They will work so hard that they will start to loose hair and leave everything else for the sake of their degree.
They start the course with enthusiasm and promises but after few weeks when the going gets though the promises evaporate. They feel that they are stuck and continue with their other online activities and do not even log in for weeks. The knowledge that they do not have to finish the course in a set time-period is doing all the damage. Soon it will change, it has to, and students will be required to finish the online degrees within a set period of time”.
His answer was really surprising for me and I left him with a regret that I shouldn’t have asked him that question. There are so many different Universities and colleges and you can find out more on http://www.friends4study.com For some strange reasons I feel that he was telling me the truth about most students. I hope you don’t mind me asking, are you one of them?

As everybody will certainly agree that having the confidence to speak publicly is a valuable skill, there is much debate as to which technique of public speaking is the most effective.
Currently, the most recognized public speaking associations are Toastmasters International and the Dale Carnegie Course.
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of the principles of communication, public speaking and leadership skills. It achieves this by promoting a “learning-by-doing” program in which members move up by making presentations in the presence of certified examiners.
The Dale Carnegie course is a program for self-improvement in which the emphasis is to be able to get the message across to the audience utilizing the speaker’s naturalness. There are fewer rules and lots of practice sessions. The course consists of twelve evening sessions; all participants are required to present a short speech.
Toastmasters Pros
Toastmasters certainly makes everything clear-cut when it comes to passing the exams. Each member is provided with a Communication and Leadership Manual containing ten speech projects the member has to fulfill. Members will then be evaluated and his speech criticized according to a set of rules.
When the member completes these projects, he is recognized to have achieved a level of competence. Advanced projects are also available after the “basics” are done to move the member up some more.
Members are encouraged to frequently attend meetings and enjoy a sense of camaraderie with fellow members.
Toastmasters Cons
The Toastmasters system seems to not be suited for people who wish to speak well but would like to retain their informality as speakers. For example: Fillers, the areas in a speech when a speaker pauses and makes an involuntary sound like “uhm” and “ah”, is a very human habit and is considered an area for improvement in Toastmasters.
The ranking system, though effective to show where the members stand, can also deter people from joining due to the perceived “elitist” nature of the ranking system.
Carnegie Pros
The course encourages the participant to use what works for him to an extent. The rules are few but fundamental. Fillers are acceptable as long as they do not distract the audience from the speech.
There are facilitators but there is no certified examiner. All participants in the session are asked to give their opinion about the speech in their terms. Some would consider Carnegie a course to understand the target audience whether it is laymen or intellectuals.
Carnegie has a positive perception with many businesses.
Carnegie Cons
The Carnegie system has been criticized by some that the time spent in particularly large classes is wasted waiting for others to finish their speeches. Some feel that this time would be better spent having two or three speeches in one night instead.
This goes to show that there are many systems to choose from but only one goal in public speaking. That is to get the message across in a manner that does not hinder the speaker.

With ever new technological advancements for instance digital TV, Hi-Def Television, Freesat & home cinema audio, if you’re existing television machine is older than five years old, then it is a superb time to acquire a new telly. But, as technology changes approximately day after day, getting a new television device can easily be for the most part tricky and puzzling.
This article attempts to help make clear all the up-to-the-minute technological improvements that will help to take your telly pleasure to a splendid new level.
High-Def Telly: Conceivably one of the most important advancement to television since the advancement of colour technology, Hi Definition (HD) telly provides detail, clarity and colour, with images typically 4 times as crisp as those from traditional TV sets. To witness Hi Def programmes you are required to possess a Hi-Def Ready telly. Sky and Freesat have already begun to offer high-def television series therefore you can now get pleasure from a collection of your beloved programmes, films and sporting occasions with remarkable realistic images.
Incorporated Digital Tuner: A telly with built-in digital tuner (also referred to as idTV) permits you to view all free to air digital television channels, such as: E4, BBC3, Sky News and many more without the need for a separate set top box.
Freesat: A new digital satellite television service supplied via a partnership between the BBC & ITV, supplying you free High-Def Telly programmes at no further fee. Freesat has no annual contract, no subscription, just one solitary fee for the television, satellite dish & installation. Plus because Freesat is transmitted via satellite, it is obtainable to roughly almost every house in the United Kingdom. Freesat TV is at the moment only accessible with Panasonic tellies.
LCD or Plasma: Though LCD and Plasma TVs work in extremely different ways, the gains of both are very alike. Nonetheless, it’s critical to consider that when deciding between a Plasma or LCD telly it is in actual fact basically a question of size. LCD is at its optimum performance up to and including thirty-two inches, while Plasma TVs deliver greatest performance at 37″ & higher. With this in mind, if you have to buy a small flat panel TV, then (which stands for Liquid Crystal Display) gives the far better performance, whereas on the other hand if you are wanting a larger screen size, then Plasma is without a doubt the best option.
In evaluation it is key to bear in mind when selecting the best TV for you, to consider your funds, your viewing distance, the look you fancy & if it is to be an LCD or Plasma telly. John Lewis offers an assortment of Televisions from established brands such as Sony and Panasonic.

A girls’ boarding school will enable your child to explore the world around her, both inside and out of the classroom. In the classroom they will have sharing and will have an equal exchange of ideas. She will get a competitive environment where she will learn to perform and dominate. In most of the schools the students remain busy on weekdays with their academic schedules, electives, extra curricular activities and evening studies. While on weekends they have a lot of relaxation, weekend trips, recreation and cultural outings.
The resident students and faculty of a girls’ boarding school form a community. The resident faculties are the disciplinarians and hand holders of the students. They always keep an eye to the girls, assist and guide them and offer counsel when necessary. They all form a family away from home. Sometimes the schools even take the resident girls to local malls, movie, shopping, amusement park and cultural events.
The girls’ boarding schools have lots of activities. What does your girl like? Is she interested in sports? Boarding schools, these days, have their own athletic centers featuring basketball and volleyball courts, fitness centers, aerobics room and also gymnasiums. Each school has a specialized gymnasium director to guide your child. If she is interested in music, there are music departments where she can have training in music. She will also have the opportunity to perform in music ensemble. The girls’ boarding schools also guide the students to express themselves artistically. They have special drawing, painting classes to develop their skills in drawing.
When your child is in a girls’ boarding school you may wonder whether your child is having proper nutrition. You need not have to worry about your child’s diet, as the boarding schools are on a mission to encourage the girls to have a proper and healthy choice regarding their daily menu. The schools promote healthier eating of the students by adding more nutritious and organic foods to their menu.
As girls start growing they may start to become interested in boys. If such happens to your child she will be more concerned about boys than her books. But studying in girls’ boarding school will protect your child from the impact of boys. Besides, the girls are not subject to sexual harassment in an all girls environment.
Social and emotional growth of the girls is the motto of the girls’ boarding schools. A good girls’ boarding school will not only offer your girl child with the support and guidance to develop her intellect, curiosity and creativity but also the school will help your child to build up her self-discipline and decision making skills and abilities.

By following these ten steps, you will become a more efficient note taker and this will help improve your overall study skills. With good note taking skills, better grades are just around the corner.
1. If possible, sit near the front and center of the class. You will be less likely to become distracted and will probably find staying focused easier.
2. Use a binder instead of a traditional notebook. This way you can add, rearrange, or rewrite pages of your notes, insert handouts and assessments in the appropriate chronological order and review the material covered in the chapter/unit much easier.
3. Put headings and the date on all papers. Organize them chronologically in your binder.
4. Take notes on loose-leaf paper and keep them organized in a three-ring binder. Make sure that you hole punch and add all of the handouts, assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. to your binder. It usually is best if everything for the entire chapter/unit is kept in chronological order in your binder.
5. Think about what is being said before you write anything down. Do not write down everything the teacher says. Pick out important phrases, terms, and concepts to focus on.
6. Record any examples the teacher may give while lecturing. Examples are extremely important in creating connections in your brain and in helping to jog your memory while studying.
7. Look for cues that teachers give to indicate that something is important. For instance, they may repeat something a few times, change the volume or tone of their voice, write it on the board or overhead, and/or creates lists for you. Be sure to ask them to repeat what they have just said if you miss the initial cue but later realize that you should be writing the material down.
8. Leave some space between portions of your notes so you can make additional comments as you study or read the text.
9. Re-write or even re-TYPE your notes. Not only will your notes be much more organized and make studying easier, but the practice of re-writing notes gives you another opportunity to think about the material as you write or type it again. Make sure that you re-write them in a timely manner. The more time that passes between taking the original notes and re-writing them, the less effective this strategy is.
10. Review these notes often. The more times you see them, the easier it is to commit them to memory and the less time you will spend studying them prior to the test.

Getting into law school can be a very arduous task for aspiring students. You need to start as early as your freshman year in high school if you decide that being a lawyer is what you really want to do for the rest of your life.
Do not be misled by the rosy portrayal of a lawyers life in TV or in the movies. In real life, lawyers would have 12 to 18 working hours, especially for those who are aspiring to be partners in their respective law firms.
In order to achieve your goal, first, you need to have the correct mindset. Here are some tips on how students can realize their lifelong goal of becoming a lawyer:
1. Know what you want, and how to get it.
First, reflect on the reasons why you would like to pursue this career. If you are just looking for the ‘flash’ or recognition of becoming a lawyer, remember that becoming one is sheer hard work. Just like in every profession, you need to give yourself into studying, then working as a lawyer.
You may have this idealistic view as a kid that you want to save the world from the injustices that is why you would like to become a lawyer.
If you find yourself still passionate about this cause, there is no harm in pursuing your dreams.
More importantly, remember that once you decide on taking up law, you need to work very hard as a student.
2. Take off your rose-colored glasses.
You need to understand that not every student who takes up law ends up with a job as a lawyer once they graduate.
You will not necessarily end up as a courtroom hero saving an “innocent criminal” in this field.
You may find yourself dealing with real estate, corporate law, divorce cases, or even drafting up wills.
Prepare yourself for all possibilities because anything could happen.
3. Ask yourself, “Am I competitive enough?”
>From the time that you send in your applications, to the time that you take the exam to be a licensed practitioner, there will be competition.
Applications for entry into law schools soar every year. What are your chances of being chosen and accepted as compared to thousands of other applicants?
Check the skills that you have and once you are confident enough that you can get into law school, then you have gone through the first step in achieving your goal.
4. Go to a university which has a record of getting a lot of students into law school.
It is safe to say that if you are a graduate of a school which “produces” a lot of great law students, then this should be a plus factor for you.
There are universities that help the students get into law school by providing mock exams and interviews, and also offer letters of recommendation.
5. Having a good grade-point-average (GPA) is not enough, you need to pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) with flying colors.
Maintain your GPA, and make sure that you perform well in the LSAT’s. There are web sites where you can take practice tests at a certain cost. You may also enroll in a course that aims to prepare you for this particular exam.
6. Be an early bird.
Once you have decided on entering law school, make sure that you submit your applications way before the deadline. This should give you ample time to prepare.
Finally, you need to organize your letter of recommendations, transcripts and all the paperworks that you will need to get in.
You may seek the advice of a consultant, undergraduates or lawyers who have already passed the stage that you are now going through as a hopeful law school student.
If you combine hard work with determination and you prepare everything in advance, you will surely gain entrance to the prestigious law school of your choice.
