Public Speakers! Check Out These Most-Mispronounced Words.

Yes, it’s a living language–English is–but there still remain words whose correct pronunciation is less common than their mis-pronunciation! In addition to giving you the right pronunciation, I’ll throw in a simple rule or two so you can figure out others on your own and not be afraid of embarrassing yourself with Pronunciation Gaffes.

(As a therapist for thirty-some years, I hate to do this to you–use the “should” word, but I gotta do it here.)

A Rule: When you have two “c’s” together, the first C is pronounced like a K, the second like an S.
ACCEDE should be ak-SEED
ACCELERATE should be ak-SELL-uhr-ate
ACCESSIBLE should be ak-SESS-i-buhl
ACCESSORY should be ak-SESS-or-ee
ECCENTRIC should be ek-SEN-trik
FLACCID should be FLAK-sid

Only when there are double S’s are they pronounced with only the S sound. i.e. as-SESS.

Middle Eastern countries are very much in the news these days. It’s nice to pronounce a person’s country correctly. In the case of IRAQ and IRAN the I’s are not pronounced “eye”, but a short i, as in BIT. If you want to get fancy, it sounds both pretty and authentic if you can flip the R.

The A’s are broad: Iraq is not “eye rack” It is “i-ROCK”; Iran is not “eye ran”. It is “i-RON”.

Here are a few of the words I’m hearing commonly mispronounced:
CANDIDATE is CAN-di-date (Pronounce both D’s)
ECHELON is ESH-e-lon
ETC. (etcetera) is eht-SEH-ter-a (No K sound)
NUCLEAR is NOO-klee-uhr (Think of new and clear.)
PATHOS is PAY-thohs (Not thahs.)
PLETHORA is PLETH-or-a
VULNERABLE is VUL-ner-a-buhl (Sound the first L.)
SCHISM is SIZ-em

I hope this little foray to the dictionary will give you the confidence to use these very nice words with the certainty that you’re pronouncing them correctly.

The Magic of Momentum: How to Beat the Procrastination Monster at Its Own Game

Posted by admin on June 26th, 2008 — Posted in Self Improvement Parlor

You procrastinate, I procrastinate, all God’s children procrastinate.

In other words, it’s normal.

At the same time, there are some things about procrastination that are not normal.

I believe that procrastination has some magical powers that we need to address if we are going to be able to beat this monster.

Magical Power Number 1 - Procrastination can take a task that is something relatively small, and make it seem gigantic.

Magical Power Number 2 - Procrastination can take a task that is something that will take a relatively small amount of time to complete, and make it seem like it will take forever to get it done.

And it does not stop there. These two magical power combine to make the whole greater than the sum of the parts by continuing to grow and grow into something so humongous that you become overwhelmed and just quit.

Score another victory for procrastination.

Here’s a simple 3 step formula for beating procrastination at it’s own game.

Step 1 - You need to give up your belief that this is a dress rehearsal.

This is real life. We do not get to do it over again. Unlike the movies and TV, we do not have as many takes as we need to get it right.

Step 2 - The next time you are tempted to procrastinate, simply put it off! That’s right, procrastinate about proacrastinating. Call it reverse psychology, prescribing the symptom, or whatever you want, it works! And it makes you laugh while it is working, which makes you more likely to have fun while you are getting things done.

Step 3 - Whatever it is that you are wanting to get done, no matter what it is, no matter what happens, you must make sure that you take at least one step in the direction of completion before your head hits the pillow tonite!

In this way, you get a jump start on your goal, which pushes procrastination far far away.

By taking action right away you begin to build momentum. And momentum has some magical powers of its own. Momentum takes things that once seemed like huge boulders in your way, and turns them into small bumps that you quickly move past on the way to success.

How to Adjust Your Leadership to Different Employees and Different Situations

Posted by admin on June 25th, 2008 — Posted in Management Info

Leadership is one of the biggest challenges managers face. How to be an effective leader, that effectively motivates staff to get their jobs done and with the quality of an owner.

One way to look at leadership is situational. In this model we tailor our behavior as leaders to the employee. For a new employee, the manager’s behavior is very directive. We’re in training mode; we give lots of information and direction. Our goal is to move an employee through several stages to a point where we are the coach and mentor, and the amount of time and direction needed from us is minimal. The employee is able to do the job well without our direction. But, we can’t just jump from directive to coach. There are a couple of additional transition stages. After directing, the manager is still telling the employee what to do, but the level of telling and direction has decreased. The employee is able to do the task with some direction and feedback, versus total direction and feedback.

The third stage is one in which the leader or manager’s role is one of support and motivation. The staff member is able to do the task with little intervention from the manager. The fourth stage is the goal, one in which the staff member is fully competent and empowered to do their job with the support and mentorship of the manager. In this stage the manager is the cheerleader, acknowledging accomplishments and the motivator.

Although, it would be easy to have linear maps of human behavior, this again is not the case. As the manager, you will have to move easily through the different phases and be able to step back if an employee needs more direction at some point. You also will move back to directing when a new task or job duty is assigned that the employee has never done before. At this point, a new training and mentorship cycle is started and the manager’s role is to provide the support needed to move successfully through each phase of developing competence to the final stage of empowered action, in which the employee is capable of doing high quality work.

This article is based upon Hershey and Blanchard’s situational leadership model, from their book: Management of organizational behavior: Utilizing Human Resources. (1982, Prentice-Hall, Inc.)

Bad Credit Loans: Be Careful!

Posted by admin on June 23rd, 2008 — Posted in Living With Loans

If you’ve gotten yourself over your head in debt, and suddenly have a need for cash right away, it is possible to get a loan for bad credit. Loans for bad credit will not give you a worse rating if you require a non-bad credit loan later down the road, and they will get you some money very quickly - perhaps too quickly.

But how could a loan for bad credit be too quick? Well, if you decide to get a bad credit loan, apply, and then suddenly - WOW - you have the money the next day, have you really thought out this bad credit loan adequately? Have you researched all of the other bad credit loan options, or did you just pick the first one that struck your fancy? Did you ask around, surf the Internet, and talk to your banking institution before applying for that bad credit loan? Did you do some reading at the library, crunch some numbers, and talk to your family about this bad credit loan, first?

If you think about it for a bit, there will be an interest rate with your bad credit loan - probably more than with any other loan you carry. It’s a risk for a lender to extend credit to someone with bad financial history, so they overcompensate with higher interest rates. Rates as high as 15 point over prime, at times. Do you really need to go into more debt asking for a bad credit loan, just to pay off another bill? Isn’t there another way?

This can all become a huge problem if you eventually need more money because of your bad credit - which means another loan. And then another, and another… you get the drift. Your interest on a $3000 loan could be as high as $500, not including the actual bad credit loan repayment itself. Can you afford this? All for a bad credit loan debt.

This cycle may only become a problem if you manage your bad credit loans poorly, or borrow more money than you can afford to pay off. To avoid these types of bad credit loan issues, ONLY borrow what you can afford - just because the process is super quick, doesn’t mean you need to come to a decision just as quickly. Take your time. Research everything well. Talk it over with friends and family. Make sure your payments won’t be over your head, especially with all of your other debts. A bad credit loan is a serious thing - don’t enter into it lightly.

Perhaps talk to some friends or family first, instead of adding to your debt and asking for a bad credit loan. Maybe if you take this choice, or perhaps try and find extra income instead, you can avoid the whole bad credit loan trap, forever. And with less bad credit comes a lesser need for a loan - and the cycle stops.

Find Out the Symptoms of Having Your Hair Fall Out

Posted by admin on June 21st, 2008 — Posted in The Healthy Way

The universal phrase for baldness is alopecia. The very most common sort of alopecia is male pattern baldness and hits typically a third of men and females. This type of baldness is traditionally permanent. Explore the latest hair loss techniques from Advanced Hair Studio, home to hair restoration.

Permanent hair loss comes in a number of forms. Male pattern baldness might often happen in the astonishingly early stages of a gents life, with hair loss starting as young as 20 years. The normal first signs might include loss of hair follicles around the top part of the head and of course at the forehead. The result will be partial or full loss of hair.

Lady pattern baldness is nearly similar to male pattern baldness resulting in permanent hair loss. This kind of hair loss and baldness is oftentimes developed after a female gives birth to her girl or boy. The hormone imbalance creates hair loss although they do not typically experience full loss of hair.

The last kind of permanent hair loss is by Cicatricial. This appears when some inflammation in the scalp starts scarring of the scalp and the hair strands fall out permanently. The girl might lose hair folicles in random sections of the scalp, or even spread all over the scalp.

With forever hair loss the astonishing solution for legions of men and women might well be to investigate a hair centre in order to gain back hair growth.

Budgeting When Your Paycheck Varies

Posted by admin on June 20th, 2008 — Posted in Finance Information

How can you decide how much you have for bills and expenses when
your paycheck varies from one payday to the next? That’s a
question a lot of people struggle with.

A few of the occupations that I can think of off hand that could
fall into this category are waitresses or waiters working for
salary and tips, truck drivers that are paid by the mile and
never know how many miles they are going to get, the
self-employed that their business income varies from season to
season, and the list could go on.

Trying to manage your finances with a steady income is hard enough
but when you never know what your paycheck will be seems almost
impossible, but it’s not. It is, however, going to be a little
more tricky.

In my Budget and Bill Organizer I talk about averaging your
expenses like your phone and electric bills that vary from month
to month. The same principle can be used to average your income.

The first step you need to take is to find records of your pay
for as far back as you can. It would be best if you had records
going back for at least 6 months.

Take these records and total the amounts you were paid for the
entire period. Then divide that by the number of months you have
records for. This will give you your average monthly income.

If you don’t have any record of your previous pay you may need to
go to your employer to get the information. If there is no way
to get this information you should start a log of how much you
get paid and use this to develop your budget.

Once you have determined your average monthly income you will
need to develop your budget just as if this was your regular pay.

Here’s where it gets tricky. You aren’t always going make the
amount you have budgeted. The only way to handle this is to
save when you make more than what you have budgeted.

Here’s an example:

You have determined that your monthly budget is $2000 per month;

In January you earn $2500. You will need to put away $500 of
that money so that you can make up for any month that your
income falls below $2000.

This sounds like a simple solution to a complex problem but it
may not be as easy as it sounds unless you accustomed to saving
money. It will take some discipline to make sure that money is
there when you need it.

There could be a bright side to this method. If you are able
to put the extra money away and you have several months that
you make more than your budget you could end up with a sizable
savings account.

When setting up your budget make sure that you don’t
underestimate your bills and expenses. This is one of the
major reasons many budgets fail.

By averaging your income it will prevent the “Feast to Famine”
approach to your spending. It only makes sense to spread your
income out so that you can cover all of your bills and expenses
every month.

Every Generation Must Defend Our Freedoms

Posted by admin on June 19th, 2008 — Posted in Radicals and Others

I just returned from seeing the movie about Edward R. Murrow, CBS News, and the Joseph McCarthy hearings of the 1950’s: “Good Night And Good Luck.”

I read books, articles, write a few, and go to the movies, to get my regular dose of inspiration.

If you tell me a story about someone who sticks to his beliefs, handles unpopularity to do so and perhaps battles persecution, you’ll get my attention, and usually my respect.

“Good Night And Good Luck” does it for me.

Here we see the backstage drama associated with countering one of the scariest and most destructive influences of the 20th century. But more significant, this is a parable for the ages.

Government, wherever situated, on our soil and off, is always defending its policies and furthering its aims by demanding the total allegiance of its citizenry. When debate is most needed, as it was during the 1950’s, and at other times, especially on the brink of or smack in the middle of wars, it is most likely to be throttled.

People, naturally, want to keep their privileges, especially their jobs and lifestyles. Speaking out against the powerful is dangerous to one’s wealth, health, and career.

But without the heroes who resist, who question authority, who force us to think twice about national decisions, who challenge us to to repudiate dangerous if not disastrous policies, all would be lost, including that which many of us only appreciate in its absence: the right to speak, write, assemble, worship and think, freely.

When I walked into the theater showing “Good Night And Good Luck” I did something I normally don’t do. I sat, shoulder to shoulder, with the rest of the folks who were there.

We were the “huddled masses” to whom that the inscription on the Statue of Liberty is dedicated.

Let’s not forget that every now and then, one of us has to stand up to tyranny.

In his day, Edward R. Murrow & Company did this very thing for us, and this film quite justifiably celebrates him.

Organic Skincare and Products

BBC Green has launched a new show stopping green url. It focuses on combating climate change and focuses into organic products. Sales of organic bread rolls are definitely growing on the back of real benefits to your health and the world. Organic leeks are really produced according to a deliberate production standard. Traditionally organic farms have been comparably tiny family run farms- and this is why organic pears was once merely for sale in small organic outlets and markets. Putney Market in North East London is one of the leading farmers markets around. On a Sunday dinner time there is a big queue of hungry locals at the organic salad bar. Nowdays folk can often get organic peppers from a wide range of nice shops. Discover organic skincare at www.bbcgreen.com.

Since the early 1990’s organic salads has had growth rates of around six percent a year, somewhat ahead of the rest of the food industry, in both developed and developing countries. For countless customers there is a belief that munching on organic grapes will probably improve your health, different people have different opinions on that. One reality that can be proved is that organic farming uses a much smaller amount of pesticides than normal agriculture. Acquiring organic potatoes is not just about health, for loads of people it’s about helping to save the planet. Some organic farming certifications schemes are definitely stricter than others. The Soil Association are definitely most strict, particularly for chicken & pigs. Soil Association certifies turkeys are kept in smaller flocks, & own more space indoors and out than others. The greater part of the other organic poultry standards are definitely closer to free- range.

Organic eye gels is now something that is popularly used. With organic it means it is all naturally organic ingredients. Organic beauty products are really much more famous & more effective than some ingredients apparent in normal day to day skincare. With naturally organic ingredients organic beauty products will work in harmony with your body & skin to enhance your body’s natural healing and regenerative capabilities. Just like when you feed your body fast food, it will let you know its not happy- your skin is no different.

Set Your Mind For Success

Posted by admin on June 19th, 2008 — Posted in Non-Assigned

Did you know you can literally program your mind so your thoughts will move you toward success naturally? Think about it. Through repetition you learned what you know now whether positive or negative. It only makes sense that through repetition you can intentionally learn anything.

Most of our lives are spent learning almost by accident. The exciting thing about childhood is that discovery is the main source of knowledge. The exciting thing about adulthood is that we can learn on purpose, intentionally.

Remember how teachers used to have students write a sentence 100 times to keep them from breaking a rule again? I remember writing “I will not chew gum in school” 100 times one year. I took the punishment on as a challenge to see how many times I could write the sentence per notebook paper line across and then how many between lines. I found I could get five rows between the lines and five columns across. Once I completed the punishment, I really did quit chewing gum in school. I did not want to take a chance on having to spend so much of my time writing the sentence again. The challenge of it was over.

What does this have to do with your success? You can do the same thing to set your mind toward anything you want to quit or anything you want to accomplish. What is known about this technique now can advance you forward in simple or complex goals.

The thing is, before you will be able to program yourself for a complex goal, you will need to write out a powerful statement that is void of all negative self-talk. There are special techniques for getting your statement clear, succinct and without the bad self-talk “trigger.” As you read the statement, your subconscious mind must agree it’s possible for the technique to work. Otherwise, as you read, your “little voice” in your head will keep putting out the negative self talk.

This technique is somewhat similar to the affirmation techniques you may have heard about in the past. Yet this way of writing your mental program goes deeper and is more specific than the traditional affirmations you may be accustomed to.

The technique I am describing is called Cybernetic Transposition. I invite you to give it a try.

Using this technique, I created a mental statement in December, 2004 to keep me focused on my goals in spite of family and friends and my desire to be with them. I was sabotaging my ultimate financial freedom goals and using my family and friends as my excuse. My ultimate goal was to create wealth that would actually give me the freedom to spend more time with my family and friends. As a result of applying the technique I have mentioned here, I was able to eliminate the constant struggle my “little voice” self-talk was creating and broke through that constant tugging. As a result, I am now well on the path to achieving my goals and I notice my family members are also more focused in the direction of their ultimate goals and dreams.

Set your mind and enjoy the process!
